On July 2, the Board of El Paso County Commissioners voted 4-0, with Holly Williams absent, to allow $5.1 million in county tax money to flow to the Air Force Academy Visitors Center complex project over 25 years.

Commissioners allocated .875 of the county’s 1 percent sales tax collected in the True North Commons Urban Renewal Area to the project, which includes a visitors center, hotel and offices at the Academy’s north entrance. The .23 percent sheriff’s tax and the county’s use tax, paid on construction materials purchased elsewhere and used here, are not included.

City Council was slated to approve a $23.5 million tax allotment for the project on July 9 after the Indy’s press deadline. The project is among City for Champions tourism venues funded in part by $120.5 million in state sales tax money over 25 years.
