A bill that’s led by U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, and counts Colorado’s Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet among its co-sponsors, would require public companies to disclose certain information about climate-related risks.

Such “risks” could include direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel-related assets, and how global warming would affect operations. Disclosing these risks, the bill’s supporters say, would improve transparency for investors and the public.

“Climate change is an urgent threat that requires every aspect of society — including business — to take action,” Bennet said via a statement from his office. “Shareholders and the public deserve to know the full picture of a company’s exposure to climate-related risks, as well as its steps to reduce emissions and address the climate crisis.”
