The South Park Education Association was to vote on Sept. 4 about whether to strike after failing to reach an agreement on a contract with the Park County School District, the association said in a release.

The district was slated to make a counter-offer on teacher pay on Aug. 28 but instead resubmitted proposals previously rejected by the association, prompting the association to issue a release.

“The District proposals do not achieve competitive educator pay and benefits that are so vital to helping every student in Park County thrive,” SPEA President Taya Mastrobuono, an elementary school teacher in Fairplay, said in the release.

She said the district’s lack of a counter-proposal demonstrates an “unwillingness to bargain in good faith.”

The association maintains the district has refused to negotiate salaries for years, keeping “excessive funds held in reserve that could build a competitive salary schedule for all employees.”

“No educator wants a strike,” Mastrobuono said. “We want to be in school with our students. However, we are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our students have the schools they deserve.”

The association and district are due to meet on Sept. 6 for further discussion.

School Board President Kim Bundgaard couldn’t be reached for comment.
