The U.S. Supreme Court was set to hear arguments Nov. 12 in a landmark case concerning the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, better known as DACA.

The Barack Obama-era program provides protection from deportation for more than 700,000 immigrants who came to the country illegally as children. But without a path to citizenship, DACA recipients have waited in limbo since 2012, when the program was instated.

Their fears were realized when President Donald Trump’s administration moved in 2017 to terminate the program.

Since then, a series of legal challenges temporarily stopped the Department of Homeland Security from completely ending DACA. It’s resumed processing DACA renewal applications, which recipients must file every two years.

The Supreme Court is expected to make a decision on DACA no later than June 2020. November’s opening arguments are scheduled after the Indy’s press time, but check csindy.com and read next week’s issue for more coverage.
