The creation of a Space Force as championed by President Donald Trump is one step closer to reality after the U.S. House passed a $738 billion military policy bill on Dec. 11.

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 was passed with sweeping bipartisan support (a 377-to-48 vote) and authorizes the creation of the Space Force as the sixth branch of the military, redesignating Air Force Space Command in Colorado Springs as the U.S. Space Force.

Colorado Springs military installations are set to receive $322 million for new construction spending ($71 million for Fort Carson, $54 million for Peterson Air Force Base, $148 million for Schriever Air Force Base, and $49 million for the United States Air Force Academy) as a result of the bill.

According to a media release by Republican Congressman Doug Lamborn, the $148 million authorized for Schriever Air Force Base will go toward beginning construction on the Combined Space Operations Facility.
