John Hazlehurst

John Hazlehurst, whose great-grandfather came to Colorado in 1859, is a Colorado Springs native. After failing to graduate from college in 1962, he spent the next six years sailing around the world in an ancient wooden sailboat that he purchased with the proceeds of an unexpected inheritance. He subsequently worked as an investment banker in New York and ran a charter boat company in the West Indies before returning to his home town in 1981. He has worked as a real estate broker, renovated Victorian houses, served six years on City Council, run four marathons, and climbed 44 14'ers. Since 1997, he has worked as a reporter/columnist for the Independent (1997-2006 and since January) and the Business Journal (2006-January 2011). He's proud to note that yeah, he finally graduated from college...
