Re: “Pension tensions

I worked under the private sector and PERA. 27 years private sector and 11 years for the state of Colorado. When I retire social security has the right to reduce my social security benefit. However, we are not allowed to use the years that we worked with social security towards total years of employment to satisfy the years of employment through PERA or visa versa in order to maximize your total retirement benefit. For someone like me who worked over 27 years in the private sector and 11 years at a Community College, in order to reach 30 years under PERA I would have to work well into my 70's. It hardly seems fair that social security can adjust the monies paid to social security but we cannot use the total time toward employment to satisfy the 30 to 35 years needed to draw at least 80%. I don't mind the fact that they do this and understand what is behind the concept, however, I believe that if they are lumping them together and in considering it to be one for retirment then the years of total employment should be considered at retirement regardless if you are retiring through social security and PERA. After all they are taking the total contribution as one. Perhaps this could be a means of getting people to retire, After all they want new teachers and so on so they can pay them less income. My husband won't retire because he wants to wait till he has at least 30 years in PERA so he can at least get 70%. He will be close to 70 years old. Too old to enjoy much after that, they keep increasing the age limits of retirement. I sure hope these hands of mine and legs last long enough to carry through the many more years that I will have to work just to be ablet to stay off of any type of public assistance. Is there something I am missing?
