Re: “El Paso County Commissioners vote unanimously for district remapping

Plain and simple the apportionment of PCT 172 (Patty Jewett) and PCT 179 (Shooks Run) into District 5 where Monument & Palmer Lake's PCT's into District 3 is a political (affiliation) veiled ploy. It seeks to divide and divest a well established community voices of the downtown and west side/Manitou older neighborhood's voices and is in violation with CO Constitutional provisions that communities are to be held together, all for the sake of attempting to maintain 100% Republican majorities in the County. No other reason. Yes some have put up a lame argument that this is a low cost, low effort way of balancing growth of the north end of the county but that also divests District 4 as well. The Republican locals fear those voices challenging their absolute majorities in the County. The whole plan must be thrown away, the public must have ample input and time and a fair apportionment must be conducted devoid of self-serving partisan considerations. If not the communities should rise up and find a way to challenge the County Board in court and let us see how cheap their veiled designs come to pass.

Carrie Vaughn who won in the genre category and is in the turquoise blouse in the picture above is also from Colorado Springs. She graduated from high school at Lewis Palmer and lived here for a few years after college. She is now in the Boulder area.

I am amazed, but not shocked, when anyone exhibits the arrogance of equating "show some spine" with "agree with my point of view."

Re: “This course doesn’t need teachers?

As much as I love online classes for the convenience of learning at flexible hours for the student, it is more time consuming than actually being in a traditional classroom setting. Will I still have the same discipline I now have for online classes if I didn't spend my childhood/adolescence amongst peers of my liking/disliking and without teachers whom strengthens my weaknesses and expose my strengths? Absolutely not. Many things can be replaced or devalued with technology (bookstores, malls, fashion retail, socializing and even dining) teachers are not one of them. Teachers do not just teach, they help shape students' attitudes, behaviors and values. They influence us to become the people we are.

They have also entered the home with out asking us. I woke up one day neaked in my bed to his dad just standing their staring at me so I cussed him all to piece. Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Of course it's a symbol of hate, if nothing else, because that's what folks CHOOSE to make it. Please stop kidding yourself, it was about allowing or not allowing slavery into the expansion Westward. I too have relatives who lived, fought, and died on both sides, but in the end they were fighting for what they believed in. The North didn't want slavery moved into Texas and the West, the South believed slavery a necessity. Slavery=Hate because Slavery is believing that you can own another human being, and you can not. Please, educate yourself before embarrassing yourself.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Actually Maeve, the reason they weren't prosecuted and executed for treason was logistics. It simply wasn't possible to put them all on trial. Lincoln was criticized for this failure and because there was no accounting made at trial for people like Lee and Jefferson, and other Confederate leaders, later generations started to laud them as heroic. Gen. George Thomas predicted in 1868: "The crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism, so that the precipitators of the rebellion might go down in history hand-in-hand with the defenders of the union."
Battle flags do not make soldiers brave, and losing a war doesn't make you a winner, and false equivalence doesn't change historical fact.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

The South-hating trolls are out here to dispute those of us who believe what the vast majority know, and have known fo r150 years. "Losers"? I've bet you say that to Native Americans and those who Remember the Alamo and Goliad/La Bahia, for two examples. The brave honor the brave. As to what the Confederate Battle Flag symbolizes, Union General Joshua Chamberlain (the guy portrayed by Jeff Daniels in Gettysburg) said later in life, "The sight of the Confederate Battle Flag always reminded me of the immense bravery of the men who served under it." Chamberlain paid tribute to his foe at Appomattox. This viewpoint is dismissed by those who want to attack the memory of men who served to protect their homes and families. The CBF is a soldiers flag - the naysayers are happy to learn hate and disrespect of American veterans, but not respect and honor - and this reveals them. I do not allow serial murderers to determine my opinions of things, nor race agitators who need fundraising dollars no matter whom it hurts, nor politicians without any genuine statesmanship skills who have more genuine principles and policies upon which to campaign. No Confederate was ever tried for treason by those against whom they fought - and now persons 150 years later hurl names? Puh-leeze. Its people who want to debase real history, and those spreading "offense" as a reason to do something (amusing after a century of Leftism) who are the threat to our country.

Re: “Local anti-war activists persist through decades of intimidation and repression

$523.9 billion is the Pentagon's Budget for 2017. Imagine what benefit a 1/2 trillion dollars might bring to Americans rather than "defense" contractors and a standing military presence throughout the world.

Only 4 guys showed up to question that? How dumb are WE THE PEOPLE to fall in line with this thinking?

Jeez, perhaps 9/11 was something we cooked up via back channels with Saudi Arabia, who fund 9 out of 10 Islamic terrorist deaths that occur. Thought that conspiracy theories were asinine but it starts adding up after a while.

Re: “Colorado GOP announces new flack

Does the use of the word "flack" in the headline indicate bias or hate? If so, Nat Stein needs to add this to his database of "hate events".

Dear R Wehner, who the heck are you?
Asking questions is now 'inappropriate' until someone has marched down to the mayors office for an appointment? If you are so well informed then answer the dudes question.
You are just rude without making a point.

Re: “UPDATE: Colorado Springs turns to reserve fund for $3.4 million bailout of forecast error

I thought the reserves were for emergencies and unplanned disasters not a way to fund day to day operations because they used unrealistic growth projections. Then why did they wait a year to tell the public conveniently when it is time to begin planning the 2018 budget. Oops we made a mistake. Where is their accountability? Do they not have to report budget indicators on a monthly or at least quarterly summary and report it to the auditors? Who is getting dinged on their performance review for this? This is not transparency.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

I find it interesting that many people from the south call the civil war the war of northern aggression. Who attacked who at Fort Sumter? If you guessed the North you need to go back to school. As far as old monuments are concerned, if the powers that be decide that getting rid of old symbols of rebellion will help calm people's obsessions with that rebellion I say melt them all down. Their is not one civil war statue that is worth someone's life. The war is over, get over it.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Maybe to some the flag represents non-emotional history, but as long as people do stuff like flaunt it from their pick-up truck as they chase pedestrians down, yelling racist chants, it has no chance of losing its terrible connection. It's up there with the swastika now, which was an ancient design used thousands of years prior to the creation of the Nazi party. Just too many ugly people associated with these pieces of "history".

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Let's take down Martin L King's statues. JFK's. Let's strip all history away. Let's burn the books on the south and the civil war.

Let's tear down Vietnam War Memorial. Lincoln's Memorial, the Washington Monument.

It's all the same folks. You opinion doesn't trump mine. Your rights are not higher or mightier than mine.

The vast majority of the comments here are wearing away the Freedom of Speech.

Maybe more tolerance folks.....

Dave :-)

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Hmmm, but you seem to be ok with the revisionist history of not even using the actual confederate flag as your historic symbol. Instead you rewrite history and use the Virginia battle flag as the confederate flag.
