Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

Mr. Pirri

Never met Mrs. Bennett. Seriously doubt if she qualifies to be included in that category described in the adjective you used above. Have met Uncle Wilbur. He seems to be a kindly old gentlemen.

One who represents what we try to do to bring ourselves up from the level of just being cavemen and elevating our selves to the point that we place things like Uncle Wilbur in our downtown parks as a fun and entertaining place to take our children for fun and relaxation and to be around other children you know, just play and splash and go around the corner for an ice cream. And the homeless who are there and what we might do to accommodate their needs also kind of brings us up from the caveman level.

But this homeless thing - - Mrs. Bennett may just have to stay home with the grandchildren and order in some pizza if the homeless bother her until Mervs wife talks serious with Mervs wifes husband about the fact that he is just not getting the job done he was elected to do. All the chains got some good coupon deals going on.

Rather than sit up there on the dias gushing all over himself about how wonderful everything is and passing out all those delightful and glitzy award plaques, Merv could jump on this homeless situation and come up with some solutions that involve more than the city getting sued. Like leading a real effort to create a real place where the homeless can legally be - - and pitching in to see what the city can do to create a temporary tent place to act as a warming shelter.

Those who are truly the compassionate, conservative Christians like the social service organizations and churches have stepped up to the plate and created a large number of emergency shelter beds to assist in the hardcore homeless from freezing to death.

But they are all still overwhelmed by the shear numbers from the magnet effect.

Those who continually throw that compassionate conservative Christian label on their election campaign material to get votes are creating roadblocks to assisting the service groups in providing enough emergency shelter beds when overflow conditions exist.

Look at the county politicians All during the 30s and 40s and the 50s and into the early 60s the county maintained a poor farm over off 21st street. This was before political correctness when poor people were just poor. They were not referred to as homeless or accommodation challenged, hell, they were just poor!

Now, with a herd of commissioners all throwing that compassionate conservative Christian stuff all over their websites and bringing it up at each meeting, they actually passed an ordinance making it against the law for the homeless to park their vehicles on county property. Yes they did. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Compassion my ass!

For many, those cars are the only place they have to stay out of the cold! It is their affordable housing the county and city officials spend hours talking about. And elected officials are taking away the one thing the poor people can count on as a place they can retreat to spend the night relatively warm and safe.

Pretty damn compassionate there, folks! Probably need to take Longinos over to the Famous and celebrate that ordinance. Out of sight of the poor folk.

The option would be to work to find a place where the homeless could actually be allowed to stay.

Was that done? Hell no.

The churches and social service agencies do a remarkable job in working to help feed, clothe and temporarily house the homeless.

So good in fact, Colorado Springs has become an an attraction magnet for homeless from all over the southwest! Excellently prepared meals 7 days a week, 365 days a week from Catholic Charities Soup Kitchen. Any number of needs fulfilled by ESM. Right down in the heart of downtown on either side of Uncle Wilbur and where Merv gushes!

A remarkable job has been done by Springs Rescue Mission another great effort being overwhelmed by the shear numbers of homeless. Again, within walking distance of downtown. The magnet has been created now, controlling the flow is an issue.

This kind of work is what compassion is all about. What the city and county have done is not compassion. It is political expediency!

One does not accomplish great things by listing all the reason it cannot be done.

Great things are accomplished by doing those things that can be done.

Merv: If your wife is going to complain about not being able to visit Uncle Wilber, why dont you get off your ass and lead the campaign to solve this problem and leave your elected office having actually accomplished something other than a boatload of simpleminded and gratuitous comments?

Would take 30 days to set up a temporary shelter for the overflow of those needing to be out of the weather on below freezing nights.

Can you get it done?

My money is on no.

Re: “Radical resistance to Trump in Jackson, Mississippi

Trump Tracker track down and supply us all the info you have that would classify Trump as a "noted racist". Or are you just abusing your job as a word speller and making things up?
So while you were in Jackson Mississippi (you were there right?) you make no mention the elementary school name change. That I suppose would make you a racist. Also no mention of May 1970 either. Clearly an omission by a racist. You are now a "noted racist", you sure are not a journalist as a journalist does not display bias.
1970 has largely been forgotten and no doubt because the shooters were local and state police and victims were black college students and black bystanders, the evidence picked up and hidden before medical was allowed to enter and give aid.. No mention of it even though Kent State killings by National Guardsmen of white students occurred only 11 days earlier. Did nobody write a song about Jackson Mississippi as was done for Kent State?
Please explain Mister Racist racist tracker hack how can you make assumptions and report that but history and actual events evade you. Promoting a Civil Rights Museum would indicate beyond doubt that you do understand or will not reveal that you do indeed know that Civil Rights Act and all the programs that followed, orchestrated by leftist liberals such as yourself, has done far more damage to Black communities in last several decades than the 150 years of slavery ever did. As you point your finger at someone the other 3 are pointing back at you. You will not inform or educate your sorry readers with this piece of tripe article but continue the tradition of keeping the Black man down in the swamp of victim-hood, tearing apart their families by offering handouts with strings attached subtly inciting anger in yet another generation that knows no other way of life thanks to the aforementioned myriad of "aide" It is you not Trump that is a full-on racist and if you did not know it you do now.

Re: “UPDATE: Sheriff's Office blocks reporter, Indy responds via attorney

Comments here sound like the reporter has exhibited heroism and bravery above and beyond the call of duty, uncovered the story of the century and saved 1000 children from 5000 mass shooters and made a citizens arrest of the 5000 shooters using only a bobby pin! Pulitzer Prize time. Imagine forcing Maketa to resign at the same time his term was up and uncovering the foul deeds...and charging him with... what did you call it? Oh yeah "messy scandals". I think.
Force this sheriff out too when his term expires but first take back all the nice things you were saying about hm during the "messy scandals" era...

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

Not sure that the frame isnt a not-so-subtle revelation of how we perceive nature, how we've relegated nature to no more than a pretty picture or a source of revenue.
Then again, the ambiguity of this frame somehow provokes thoughts beyond its existential presence...how our views are constrained, managed by others, encouraged to disregard the big picture that can be seen simply by stepping back, or around.
It would be interesting to watch how individuals spontaneously respond upon encountering its unexpected presence, and what those responses could tell us about us.
After all, if the purpose of art is to stimulate a reaction, then, as we see, this is a pretty successful "work of art".
That said, I havent found any indication that any aesthetic considerations were put into the frame, or it's placement. Just as in nature, however, some art is unintentional.
I am reluctant to condemn such. I think I'll visit the FAC and look at some frames.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

There needs to be accountability for those who broke the rules and allowed this. That is the problem with government these days - do what you want, to heck with what the tax paying citizens want or their rights. This kind of behavior is not ethical, it is not sustainable, and it should never be acceptable. We need to demand accountability and responsibility NOW.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

The Garden of the Gods park was founded with this intent: known forever as the Garden of the Gods "where it shall remain free to the public, where no intoxicating liquors shall be manufactured, sold, or dispensed, where no building or structure shall be erected except those necessary to properly care for, protect, and maintain the area as a public park." This should never have been allowed to proceed. It is detracting from the natural beauty of the park and destroys a beautiful view all in the name of the commercialism of our city. No task force or group should be allowed to deface public lands. Additionally, it has been said it will be reviewed in 2018. Why do we have to keep "undoing" projects leaders in this city think are best for the citizens? This needs to be removed immediately and recalls started for anyone in leadership who allowed this. At this rate, we should simply brand our city nepotism crony springs.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

Do you feel:

This art/sculpture frame adds to the beauty of the park and should remain, or

Detracts from the beauty of the park and should be taken down?

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

While the G, being a daily, broke this story earlier (I believe?), the INDY (as always) is doing the heavy lifting to keep this on the front burner. Kudos also to Jill Gaebler who had the tact to nicely request the removal and the guts to suggest what the citizens were liable to do if not heard.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

This is tacky and doesn't belong inside the park. Maybe if they wanted to put it in the parking lot it would be less of an eyesore. The beauty of Garden of the Gods is in the natural glory of the scenery. This looks like something you would expect to find on the old boardwalk in Atlantic City NOT in one of our cities most popular tourist attractions.
