Re: “Communication is key to surviving a disaster

Really wish Thomas had checked with our local Amateur Radio Emergency Service coordinator or PIO when writing this article.

Re: “Communication is key to surviving a disaster

Good old fashioned local and national news radio is essential at times of disaster. Shortwave covers the world.

MikeB - if you find your account suspended it is because you spam the comments.
Your content is crummy but that isn't the reason you are being shut down. It is the mindless yelling in comments. Mindless Alex Jones like comments.

Re: “Food deserts limit access to healthy foods for low-income people

People have great ideas that do not help the person of low income having access to better food. Notice the part about transportation. I also don't think you'll find warehouses in the middle of every 'food dessert'.

After my 9 hour job I don't have to spend an hour each way traveling 15 miles home on public transport. It is interesting that neighborhood markets' are still the bigger box store that pushed out the convenient local market from neighborhoods. Where I grew up there was a strip mall 3 blocks away with a deli, meat store, and a Korean (which is a vegetable / fruit store). The other direction 3 blocks was the other deli, the kosher deli / bagel store and a fish store. These groups of stores were also where the buses stopped. People are tired and education won't help them stretch that $4.50 a day to feed 4 people. I also realize that learning smart menus does work but my point is the immediate need is cost to feed families that might not even be able to make it to the food shelves.

Re: “My white privilege, my brown grandchildren

Paul, is there any evidence that could convince you that white privelege doesnt exist?
Privilege comes from socioeconomic factors, not racial makeup.

The concept of white privilege assumes that all white people grow up under the same circumstances, in the same way it assumes that black people do as well. If you grow up with a white single mother in a housing project in Holyoke, youre not going to have access to the same type of guidance and resources at home as a rich kid (white or black) from Longmeadow. Poor white students will never be able to qualify for minority scholarships, and thus have no privileges, while upper middle class black students have a plethora of opportunities that would not be available to them if they were white.

Re: “Reader: Promote plant-based foods in local schools

JVM I dont know about others but my youngest is over 30 and I was always responsible for feeding them when they were young. Keeping a roof over there heads there butts covered and educating them. Watching my children with there kids nothings changed and nothings free. Where do you guys come from? Maybe just looking for something to grip about?

JWM: Perhaps it's changed since you went, but these days schools sell lunch to kids.

Claus Singer, As parents we need to be responsible for feeding our own children. Not the governments job!

Re: “Food deserts limit access to healthy foods for low-income people

Food deserts are a huge issue in SO many places and empowering residents to have a voice in what they need is the way to create real change. That said, I LOVE the King Soopers at Hancock and Academy. I had the sweetest juicy plum of the whole summer that I bought there just yesterday. Yes there are many issues in SE Springs but we must lift up our joys as well as our concerns. That store rocks. There are many military, retired, working, moderate, middle and even upper income residents in SE Springs -- think Valley Hi, Soaring Eagles, Sand Creek, Satellite townhomes. These are joys...

Re: “My white privilege, my brown grandchildren

Thanks to all for your comments.

For those who do not believe that white privilege exists, is there any evidence that would cause you to change your minds?

For example, if I found out that criminal sentencing outcomes were the same for all races, I would change my mind about the existence of white privilege.

Re: “My white privilege, my brown grandchildren

I see that many have already ridiculed this horrible column. I am so sick and tired of liberal arts grads pulling out a crying towel. One ticket is a meaningless statistic. Absurd. Oh, I have had plenty of tickets and fines and no salutes. One data point is absurd. My five kids went to public schools and have learned that they get no advantage from being white... I was visiting one son at college and a friend of his walked in..blonde haired.... just enough Indian tribe in him for free tuition. My kids didn't get any of these culture give-aways. Now that kid had been given a priv. I have met several white men in the last year full of WP. In every case, they were fortunate to have luck in their lives thousands of others never had. If you went to all private schools and were given a job, and nobody I know got that, then maybe you should feel guilty. Maybe you should pay back in service and not cry in the towel.

TruB - Are you on drugs? Yes, please people - search my name. You're not going to see any support for white nationalism, and in fact will see the opposite. You are lying.

Re: “This ain’t the Summer of Love

It is hard to sympathize with people who talk shit. Antifa speaks against other leftists in a destructive manner and then want applause because they say they will punch Nazis in the nose. They are like the 3% who somehow think they are better patriots. I dont think this author (like ANTIFA) has done anything to understand why some are not happy with their actions. Many of us have been protesting for years without covering our faces. Weve gotten our death threats and dealt with the cowards who make them. ANTIFA also seems to spread the feeling that voting doesnt matter. They also keep telling older liberals that they F#$ked up everything and broke all our promises. (Ive got no idea who promised the youth anything). Yes, DreamHost should fight this request and more people should be spending a minute of those phone calls and letters and protests on the issue of sharing this data. It is a shame that the lies spread about Black Lives Matter are blatant.

I sure do not get the last 2 sentences of this article: scared of its own most vital elements ????. The center cant hold and we wont find the right having conversations in the open about criticizing the different parts (or groups) of their make up. The author hasnt dropped it like its hot or left us understanding whats got to give?.
People want to be applauded for doing things while dressed in black that everyone else (us leftists) have been doing without trying to draw lines in the sand. Unity was found in supplying medical support and feeding the homeless. Many older liberals have no room for mumbling how capitalism needs to be abolished but we do understand wanting to get rid of money in politics.

The group of people who are listening to Alex Jones and creating the divide in America need to be stopped and it will be difficult to do without treating it as having enemies. My nerves and stomach cant take speaking of other people as the enemy. This is what makes my heart heavy and the reason I think most liberals seem pro issue to show inclusion. Im sure it wasnt the people who vote R for everything showing up at DACA and lovelivesHere rallies.

As long as we are going to consistently dissect liberals out in the open we should pull the Band aid and get to it. Working together also goes both ways.
