Re: “Reader: Free speech is for everyone except Christians

Since Don McCullen can't find his own ass with both hands, it's really nice to see so many citizens handing it (his ass) to him, no strings attached. Bravo!!

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

If the writer of this letter actually KNEW the recorded words of William Tappan Thompson she would keep quiet about "revisionist" history. This isn't revision;
These are HIS words;
"As a people, we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause. Such a flagwould soon take rank among the proudest ensigns of the nations, and be hailed by the civilized world as THE WHITE MAN'S FLAG."-William Tappan Thompson
Combine that with the fact that the "rebel flag" was used by the KKK and others who fought integration from the 1940s until today and it becomes very hard to understand how someone can deny that it's a symbol of racism more than it is any other thing. "

It IS a flag representing racial hatred, no matter what revision the "daughter" of "The South" wishes to apply.

Re: “Reader: Sen Gardner, show some spine and stand up

Ive seen the VA in action first hand Ive also seen Medicare work and in my life in my dealings a hell of a lot better then these private corporations and way way better then not having anything. At least with Medicare and the VA if you got sick or hurt twenty years ago and something came out of that infliction THEY STILL TREAT YOU.

Re: “Reader: Sen Gardner, show some spine and stand up

"The solution to health care is to get rid of the insurance companies and Big Pharma and provide universal coverage. "

Have you seen how well the VA works? Trading one set of problems for another doesn't seem like much of a solution.

Re: “Reader: Sen Gardner, show some spine and stand up

It seems to me Mr Gardner cow tows to everyone except his constituents! He sides with trump, he poses with murderous dictators, and he refuses to have face to face town halls. How can he possibly represent any of us on health care? His only agenda is nailing down a DC job with his pal Donnie. Very sad for Colorado and hopefully we can get rid of him in 2020

I am amazed, but not shocked, when anyone exhibits the arrogance of equating "show some spine" with "agree with my point of view."

Re: “This course doesn’t need teachers?

As much as I love online classes for the convenience of learning at flexible hours for the student, it is more time consuming than actually being in a traditional classroom setting. Will I still have the same discipline I now have for online classes if I didn't spend my childhood/adolescence amongst peers of my liking/disliking and without teachers whom strengthens my weaknesses and expose my strengths? Absolutely not. Many things can be replaced or devalued with technology (bookstores, malls, fashion retail, socializing and even dining) teachers are not one of them. Teachers do not just teach, they help shape students' attitudes, behaviors and values. They influence us to become the people we are.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Of course it's a symbol of hate, if nothing else, because that's what folks CHOOSE to make it. Please stop kidding yourself, it was about allowing or not allowing slavery into the expansion Westward. I too have relatives who lived, fought, and died on both sides, but in the end they were fighting for what they believed in. The North didn't want slavery moved into Texas and the West, the South believed slavery a necessity. Slavery=Hate because Slavery is believing that you can own another human being, and you can not. Please, educate yourself before embarrassing yourself.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Actually Maeve, the reason they weren't prosecuted and executed for treason was logistics. It simply wasn't possible to put them all on trial. Lincoln was criticized for this failure and because there was no accounting made at trial for people like Lee and Jefferson, and other Confederate leaders, later generations started to laud them as heroic. Gen. George Thomas predicted in 1868: "The crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism, so that the precipitators of the rebellion might go down in history hand-in-hand with the defenders of the union."
Battle flags do not make soldiers brave, and losing a war doesn't make you a winner, and false equivalence doesn't change historical fact.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

The South-hating trolls are out here to dispute those of us who believe what the vast majority know, and have known fo r150 years. "Losers"? I've bet you say that to Native Americans and those who Remember the Alamo and Goliad/La Bahia, for two examples. The brave honor the brave. As to what the Confederate Battle Flag symbolizes, Union General Joshua Chamberlain (the guy portrayed by Jeff Daniels in Gettysburg) said later in life, "The sight of the Confederate Battle Flag always reminded me of the immense bravery of the men who served under it." Chamberlain paid tribute to his foe at Appomattox. This viewpoint is dismissed by those who want to attack the memory of men who served to protect their homes and families. The CBF is a soldiers flag - the naysayers are happy to learn hate and disrespect of American veterans, but not respect and honor - and this reveals them. I do not allow serial murderers to determine my opinions of things, nor race agitators who need fundraising dollars no matter whom it hurts, nor politicians without any genuine statesmanship skills who have more genuine principles and policies upon which to campaign. No Confederate was ever tried for treason by those against whom they fought - and now persons 150 years later hurl names? Puh-leeze. Its people who want to debase real history, and those spreading "offense" as a reason to do something (amusing after a century of Leftism) who are the threat to our country.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

I find it interesting that many people from the south call the civil war the war of northern aggression. Who attacked who at Fort Sumter? If you guessed the North you need to go back to school. As far as old monuments are concerned, if the powers that be decide that getting rid of old symbols of rebellion will help calm people's obsessions with that rebellion I say melt them all down. Their is not one civil war statue that is worth someone's life. The war is over, get over it.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Maybe to some the flag represents non-emotional history, but as long as people do stuff like flaunt it from their pick-up truck as they chase pedestrians down, yelling racist chants, it has no chance of losing its terrible connection. It's up there with the swastika now, which was an ancient design used thousands of years prior to the creation of the Nazi party. Just too many ugly people associated with these pieces of "history".

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Let's take down Martin L King's statues. JFK's. Let's strip all history away. Let's burn the books on the south and the civil war.

Let's tear down Vietnam War Memorial. Lincoln's Memorial, the Washington Monument.

It's all the same folks. You opinion doesn't trump mine. Your rights are not higher or mightier than mine.

The vast majority of the comments here are wearing away the Freedom of Speech.

Maybe more tolerance folks.....

Dave :-)

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

Hmmm, but you seem to be ok with the revisionist history of not even using the actual confederate flag as your historic symbol. Instead you rewrite history and use the Virginia battle flag as the confederate flag.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

You say that, but the monuments in new orleans have quotations about white supremacy on them.

The war was about state's rights, to free labor.

The flag is largely a symbol of hate.

Its got more to do with the groups that have adopted those symbols as there message of hate and bigotry that make them repulsive to many Americans in this day and time.

Charlies Manson was also part of our history. Do you celebrate him? The confederates lost, just like England, Mexico, and Germany.

Re: “Reader: I'm fed up with the hate being spewed at the symbols of our history

For a "Daughter of the Confederacy," you seem to know remarkably little about it. You celebrate a flag designed by men who decided that owning their fellow human beings was more important than maintaining the integrity of these United States. It's a symbol of treason, hatred, and inhuman cruelty towards one's fellow man.

Diana Belles sounds like the history revisionist since she is wrong about what schools have been teaching for 150 years. To bad you didn't do anything to explain your position other than to tell people they are wrong.
Just yelling WRONG doesn't even work for #45.
