Re: “Despicable Me 2 lives up to the title in all the worst ways

What a bitter review. The only thing I could take away from it was that hand-wringing liberals should just steer clear of the cinema if all they can do is see the worst in everything.

Re: “Despicable Me 2 lives up to the title in all the worst ways

As a mexican who saw this film in a theater full of Mexicans in Mexico, I can tell you: nobody was offended. See, the rest of the world doesn't expect anything better from americans, so we take it with a grin and enjoy the show. If there's anybody offended out there it's the mexicanAMERICANS or whatever-AMERICANS or white-guilt people who've sold their souls to the PC apocalypse where comedic violence only ever must happens to cis-gendered, white, well-accomodate men, otherwise it's wrong to laugh about it. I suppose you didn't take notice of the main character being humiliated by dressing in drag and being assaulted by the female lead, then unceremoniously being thrown into the trunk of her car as if the role of the stereotypical caveman who knocks her bride unconscious and drags her to his man cave to commit rape was reversed. Or, you know, maybe it was just a bit of fun.

Tell me, if men and female are equal in regards to rights and social standing, or at least, we want them to be equal, why is it that it's wrong for a white female character to be the subject of cartoon violence but it's perfectly acceptable for a male to be the victim?

Yes, the film wasn't as good as the first one and it definitely didn't change my life, but it isn't an atrocity that spits on the face of society and equal rights for everyone. Good day.

Re: “Despicable Me 2 lives up to the title in all the worst ways

Wow... "Me 2 is crude, racist, sexist and in entirely well-worn ways"? Seriously?

The movie was fun, silly and exactly what I had hoped for from a fun and silly movie. I suppose you *could* (and have) over-analyzed this light-hearted movie as though it was Tolstoy or Plath - but I think most people would simply enjoy the movie for what it is. Fun!

Lighten up, Ms. Johanson.

Re: “UPDATE: Tiny House Jamboree to leave Colorado Springs

Not happy about this since we already bought non-refundable air tickets, non-refundable hotel. and took vacation time off. Why they couldn't have gone ahead with this years, and then made the big changes for next year. This is just to close to the event to cancel it and they sounded so gleeful about it. SUCKS!

Re: “Trifecta bares it all onstage

Aqaustar99 do you know all these women personally AND every person they have been with? How you know they're straight? Because they're married? I'm married to a man and munch the ladies right alongside him. How queer is queer enough? Do they all need to be holding a tub of hummus aloft in one hand and a vulva like a bowling ball in the other, hairy armpits displayed for all to see? Stay in that little pigeon hole you have created for yourself but don't try to jam others in one.

Re: “Douglas Herman and Sonia Nandzik want to start conversations about the global refugee crisis

Griffin,
According to your response, the speakers acknowledge that the name of the organisation is an artificial tag line, as they clearly state that immigrants walk a MINIMUM of 1976km, but they told you that they have to walk 1694km instead of the 1500km that a crow would fly?

As to your in depth write up about her LinkedIn profile, you should look into the public EU records or just find the nice billboard pictures of Sonia Nandzik and Jaroslaw Gowin together as you can see from the link below. Yes, you are probably correct that Ms. Nandzik was a secretary for a Parliamentarian, but she also ran for a seat (and lost thankfully) as part of a a bigoted party.

https://twitter.com/marianwasiczek/status/468676163125391360

Why are you supporting racist, bigots in your newspaper and continuing to defend them. Why do you let them lie about the refugee crisis through you? Lastly, it's pretty pathetic that they (supposed experts on the subject) have only just heard about the Rohingya crisis as these issues started in 1982 and the persecutions in 1990. These two weren't even out of High School. You can do better Griffin.

Re: “Douglas Herman and Sonia Nandzik want to start conversations about the global refugee crisis

Griffin,
Your research on these two is unimpressive as with a simple google search, you will see from that the real distance from Aleppo to Athens is really 1208km and there is no physical way to turn that into a 1976km trek. Meanwhile, it looks to be Douglas Herman's birth year and even more ironic is that nearly 2000km of fences have been built to keep refugees out of Europe. In this era of fake news run by our politicians, it is important to keep the facts straight and be able to find a "Milkshake Duck" when it appears. The facts are that the founder of this organisation, Sonia Nandzik, is a far right-wing politician. She ran for a seat in European with the anti-immigrant, anti-gay, bigoted party. Jaroslaw Gowin, the head of her party has been quite controversial and a quick read of his wikipedia shows you what this lady really stands for and what her agenda is.

Your a journalist, we would expect you to do your research!

Re: “UPDATE: Tiny House Jamboree to leave Colorado Springs

Darin here from the Jamboree. The event was international. 10 countries that we know of represented. 50% from out of state. Hotels were booked solid, restaurants, businesses swamped north, and we were warned if we backed up traffic in I 25 like the first year, we would be shut down. :)

Unfortunately the event was and is getting too big for our small band of grassroots staff and volunteers. I applaud them and appreciate the staff at the Air Force Academy for the great relationship last year. It was a good venue for where it was at, but has evolved quickly into needing much bigger facilities with indoor space as well.

I hate to see it leave my town, but like last year...it got too big and we needed to make some very fast decisions and changes. We hope to be back!

More announcements to come.

AQUASTAR99 - You're doing what you claim to hate. Being a bigot. Just because they may not subscribe yo YOUR queer standards does not make you end all be all in the Queer world.
You want equal rights? Then treat EVERYONE as an equal.

Re: “Despicable Me 2 lives up to the title in all the worst ways

I'm a liberal, a minority, and a feminist---and I loved the movie. The female character in the film who is "treated like a prey animal" according to the reviewer, was NOT "annoying but harmless." Lucy (not Gru) shoots her with a dart because the woman was about to pull Gru's hairpiece off in front of an entire restaurant. It was a bit of comedy and it would be a fair bit of exaggeration to call this evidence of some sexist worldview.

Yes, lighten up.....including Mr. Liberal Basher up there.

Re: “Colorado Classic cycling race starts in the Springs, attracts world-class cyclists

I can't be the only resident who believes that a bike race shouldn't close down an entire downtown. I'd like to work with whoever is interested to make sure that this never happens again. I would consider changing my opinion if someone showed me how this event benefited the city more than hurt it.

This reviewer is a perfect example of the 'finds everything offensive' brigade'. I hope this reviewer stays home for the rest of her life as it is obvious she finds the world just too mean and oppressive.

wtf? I don't give a f___ing sh*t about your article. I read the first sentence and enjoyed it. After that, I sort of lost interest. You should just write F___ing sh*t stories only.

Re: “Review: TheatreWorks tries with The Wild Duck, but the material doesn't hold up

Todd is simply wrong about our running time; The Wild Duck runs reliably 2 and 1/2 hours as advertised (including intermission), which is actually 15 minutes shorter than the recent London revival. Obviously he thought the play went on forever, and it's true that there is a lot of play here, and very long build up to a climax, but all of this is crucial to its shattering climax and cumulative power. Ibsen has not written a play which depends on audience empathy with his characters, whose limitations are immediately evident. Instead he has created an astonishing mix of melodrama, symbolism, irony, tragedy, satire, poetry and realism. The villain thinks he's the hero; his feckless victim thinks he is a romantic tragic figure. Blind idealism and life lies still abound. Todd thinks the material doesn't hold up but I suspect while snoozing he was weighing it very lightly:the play really is a masterpiece--the more time we have spent with it the more we have been rewarded, and our experience has been shared by actors and directors and audiences for the last 100 years. We are very proud of our beautiful production, and we encourage Todd to see the show again after he has polished his glasses, adjusted his prescription and found his white cane. I will be happy to help him find his seat and show him the light :-)

Re: “Despicable Me 2 lives up to the title in all the worst ways

In some ways I agree. Steriotypes are annoying. But in the end I think I laughed once. Just not a good movie. Boring, tedious, reaching. It's like they took a bunch of shorts, added a Mexican, slapped them together into a movie. I'm not impressed. If you liked the lorax or rango you might like this film. It lacks heart. I wonder if they even had fun making this movie. Or maybe this was just a really long preview for minions comming out in 2014. Sad sad sad...
