A kinder, gentler practice

Bikram says get the body in shape first in order to receive the spiritual benefits of yoga. But many yoga practitioners take a more direct approach to the heart. Teryl Lundquist of Yoga Journeys teaches Kripalu yoga, a "compassionate" form of Hatha yoga centered on inner body wisdom. "Kripalu," says Lundquist, "is a meditation in motion. It ranges from gentle to dynamic, and creates balance and healing." Also at Yoga Journeys are classes in Shambava, or "heart centered" yoga, classical Hatha yoga, prenatal yoga, yoga for cancer patients and their families, and yoga for energy block release. Lundquist offers a meditation class on the fourth Friday of every month, and offers guided group retreats to the Yucatan of Mexico. On Saturday, Feb. 10, Yoga Journeys will offer a partner yoga workshop exploring the benefits of doing yoga with partner assistance and simultaneous stretching. Pre-registration is required. The workshop will be held at the First Congregational Church downtown. To get a schedule or register for Yoga Journeys classes, call 477-9511 or drop by the studio at 709 N. Nevada Ave., Suite 201.
