So maybe the world isn't the dark and scary place Mom told us it was. At least, not in the eyes of local rock outfit Abandonato.

"There's a lot of anger and darkness in the music world right now," says lead guitarist Jesse Howard. "We want to promote joy and happiness through most of what we do."

It's an outlook evident within the catchy and harmonizing hooks, keystrokes and ballad-like riffs on their album, Autumn Songs.

"If we could, we'd love to be the biggest band in the world," Howard says. "And we'll fight to keep doing it."

Or they'll gracefully show members the door. This is Abandonato's second lineup; after realizing the old set didn't work, the band took an eight-month hiatus in early 2005 before regrouping.

Now the foursome has found the right recipe for success, Howard says. The only problem? Too few of the venues in town are open to hosting original groups like this one.

"We don't play too many covers," Howard says with a sigh, "which is why we don't get to play a lot of the bars."
