Re: “Springs family deals with consequences of a doctor's misguided surgery decision

The focus of this article is so amateurish. The crux of the matter is two fold: a) a questionable decision that, according to the article, only ONE other doctor (in hindsight) disputes-these scenarios/decisions happen/are made every day, in every hospital-that is why medicine is not performed by robots will always be an imperfect science and b) consent obtained, in good faith by the doc through an English speaking relative (there is no malice, and it sounds like he generally thought they understood). There are several much bigger issues which get no attention. First, why is the immigration/legal status of the parents conveniently not addressed? The issue of providing free health care to illegal immigrants and their children is a big one, not going away, and not getting cheaper. How much do you think the pediatric specialist received in compensation from this case? Not much, if anything. Taking care of these high risk populations (lost to follow up, non compliant) promote defensive medicine, and we all lose. Secondly, the much more important issue concerns the loss of so many pediatric specialists at Memorial in the past few weeks. It is a privilege for a city to offer a full service children's hospital. Keep up the great writing, Pam, and you will lose the target of your plaintiff attorney-viewpoint bully pulpit, as all kids care will be in Denver.
