Re: “In troubled water

As a citizen volunteer who has also attended the Sheriff's, DA's and County's citizen colleges, I find it appalling that so many citizens in this community are blind to the budget problems facing the county. At the same time, I am impressed beyond measure by the magnificent job being done by the many employees and elected officials of the Sheriff's Office, the DA's Office and the County. It is amazing that Terry Maketa and John Newsom can keep the employees they have and that those employees can retain such a positive attitude about their jobs. With every cut in funding, the employees are expected to do more and more with less and less. Most of the budget problems facing the county are not the fault of the current county commissioners and it is certainly not the fault of the department heads who have to do their jobs with limited funds. Much of the problem is two fold: 1) the negative ratcheting affects of Tabor, and 2) unfunded mandates that the state and federal government impose on counties. It would be nice if we could force the state and federal governments to fund every mandate they impose on us, but fat chance of that happening. We are faced with a real problem in that necessary functions are under staffed and under funded, buildings and equipment have gone too long without needed repairs, and basic infrastructure (roads, water, drainage, etc.) are falling apart. As citizens of the county (and yes, that includes every one who lives in the city) we need to step up to the plate and vote to approve the necessary taxes to adequately fund our community. I live in the city of Colorado Springs, like most of you probably do, but that doesn't get us off the hook for all of the required justice services (jail, court, investigation, prosecution, etc.) and human services (welfare, Medicaid, child services, etc.) the county provides, along with the niceties like parks and recreational services.
