Re: “God damned: Wrath of the Titans

A much better movie than this review would indicate, probably because I thought Immortals was just a mess while Wrath is much more coherent. It's cheesy in places, but entertaining, and I thought the effects managed to get the idea of gods fighting pretty well.

Re: “Letters

Ah HA! Mr. DePalma, I see what you did there. While stating the percentage of wealth each bracket contained and what percentage of the total taxes they paid, you completely neglected to connect what percentage of their income actually went to those taxes. Oh, you tried to foist it with your "31 percent" there, but careful reading will notice that you said that was the rate they were set at, but not necessarily what they ACTUALLY PAID. Looking that up, the real rate was around 18-19% for that year. Why is there a huge disconnect between your number and mine? Because you did not factor in things like the Long Term Capitol Gains Tax which is significantly lower than the income tax and a huge and growing factor in the megarich's income. And I also particularly appreciated how you defined it as them paying their "fair share." An interesting view considering they are paying effectively half the rate of the rest of the population and to support these generous, and ruinous, rates we are being asked to cut back on vital services and programs while nothing is being demanded in return. While you probably feel pretty confident in the factualness of your arguments, getting numbers to dance to the megarich's tune is what many of us call "lying."

Re: “Bait and bombs

Could someone please keep MaryAnn Johanson away from martial arts movies? Her contempt for even the concept of them and assumptions of over-testoneroned fans prevents a fair review of them as she casually consigns any and every one of them to the trashbin. See her Karate Kid review for an example of a very good movie that she barely watched and what she saw was jaded with her preconceptions.

Re: “Letters

I'd like to ask the author of "American Dream," what exactly does he think students may be doing at college. The answer, STUDYING. As appealing as you think dropping everything to labor in the cold away in Salida, as a once and future student, it would have been more or less impractical or even impossible for your average student. Classes, tests, homework, labs all demand serious amounts of time. Add to that, many have jobs and all need free and social time or have a melt down. And all those government benefits? Most are loans, making it even more imperative to do well in class if they want to get out of the massive debts they will accrue in school. Stop falsely criticizing a group of people working for their own Dreams for not dropping everything to help with yours.

Re: “Consider yourself warned

AP_Story, how politically astute do you need to be a Republican these days? Just say everything's the Democrats fault and "no" to anything they say. The sheep will gladly follow you with just that and a few platitudes towards "family values."
