For anyone who’s endured the Hannibal Lecter film franchise, expressions like “comfortable in one’s own skin” and “pick your brain” can trigger less-than-pleasant associations. Danny Kiranos, aka Amigo The Devil, appears more than happy to plant those sorts of associations in unsuspecting listeners’ minds, regaling us with original freak-folk murder ballads like “Hungover in Jonestown,” “Dahmer Does Hollywood” and “The Recluse” — in which he does indeed deliver the couplet “I need to feel comfortable in my own skin / But I think I like the one that you’re living in.” The beefy Florida native, whose slew of garish tattoos includes one of God with an iPod, started out playing hardcore and subsequently became obsessed with the Southern Gothic explorations of bands like Denver’s own 16 Horsepower. Today, he accompanies himself on banjo and has been known to conduct sloppy sing-alongs in which audience members collectively croon “I hope your husband dies.” If this is your kind of thing, we won’t judge you, although you might want to tell your spouse you were out doing something else.
