After a near-death experience on the 2013 Warped Tour, it was clear that Amity Affliction frontman Joel Birch needed to clean up his act, which he apparently has. What came as more of a surprise was how last year’s This Could Be Heartbreak album also found him cleaning up his vocals — not a lot of them, but some — a role he’d always ceded to autotune-happy bandmate Ahren Stringer. But don’t expect the Australian post-hardcore band to get all emo on us anytime soon. While newer songs like “I Bring the Weather With Me” may go heavy on catchy hooks and guitar solos, the band can still churn out guttural moshpit-pleasers like “Straight Up” and “Death’s Hand.” Their rendition of Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” probably won’t make the cut (nor will Stringer’s odd novelty-rap “The White Joel Birch”), but hey, you can’t have everything.
