Re: “Initiative 2C, Ask a Mexican, Manitou schools, and more

Regarding the letter from Mr. Fears about out of district students attending Manitou D14 schools. By law, D14 must accept choice students, each of which adds $7,300 in state revenue to the district. We consider each choice student to be an asset to the district for a number of reasons, including that by filling desks otherwise left empty, a choice student adds state dollars which fund the districts programs and allow for rich and varied classes in areas such as engineering, foreign language, art and music. If choice students did not attend D14, it would decrease revenue by over $4 million, making it difficult for the district to offer the wide range of programs that it currently does. If 3B does not pass, it will result in programs and services being cut. Choice students may go elsewhere, reducing the district’s budget and leading to a downward spiral that will hurt every student in the district. The only solution to Colorado’s funding crisis in K-12 education is at the local level. For this reason, I urge D14 voters to vote “Yes” on 3B.
