Arlene’s Beans is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday; it’s well worth planning around their schedule. Service comes with a smile, and the vibe inside’s convivial, with quick service for dine-in or to-go orders. Most menu items land under $10, and everything comes on paper plates with wrapped utensil packs at the tables. Elevated this isn’t, but it’s all good eats.

We try a tamale plate ($8.99) with two tender, flavorful pork tamales smothered in delicious, sweat-inducing red chile sauce with rice and beans. It’s a stunner, but the capsaicin-averse should ask for a side of sour cream. We also try the Lobo ($12.99), a big ol’ burrito stuffed with carne asada, bell peppers, onions, beans and rice, then smothered with red or green chile (we go Christmas in March and get both). The green sauce tastes milder than the superb red, but the carne’s the real star, singing with char and lime. Yeah, we’ll be back.
