Re: “Miles: D-2's hero, or not?

Good riddance! Mike Miles is nothing more than a power-hungry megalomaniac and a school-yard bully. Now that he and his minions have thrown their weight around and completely gutted Harrison District 2 of many fine educators and programs, he is moving on. One has to wonder how many years it will take Harrison to recover. May God help Dallas Independent School District...

Re: “'Ride it out'

chelle tomasik, I certainly am sympathetic to your situation and do not begrudge your food stamps in any way, shape, or form. That is why we pay help those when they really need it. I'm sorry you are caught up in such a bureaucratic nightmare. I am just surprised at some of the statistics put forth in this article. Good luck to you, and God bless.
qurudori, I'm assuming your comment is directed to me, although I fail to see what community centers, closed restrooms in parks, and Care and Share have to do with my comment. No, I do not live on the North End. Yes, I do make more than $35,000 a year, but I also have two jobs and work seven days week several months of the year. I am sorry for your friend's situation, and for the situations of those who cannot find jobs or who are underpaid. However, I work with a woman who COMPLETELY scams the system and receives all kinds of "help," even though her live-in and the father of some of her children has a great job with excellent benefits. She is proud of all the assistance she illegally gets by claiming only her income and listing her common-law husband as her "roommate." She is constantly bragging about all her freebies. That is part of why things don't work....there are a lot of people out there who defraud the system, too. It's hard to listen to her crowing when I am working seven days a week to provide for my family. That's all I meant by my comment.

Re: “'Ride it out'

One in ten people in El Paso county receive food stamps? Unbelievable. Is our situation really that dire? It is hard to fathom that there are that many people unable to work or who don't earn enough to support themselves without government assistance. (I, myself, work two jobs to pay my bills.) It is difficult for me to be sympathetic because I know of too many cases where people COMPLETELY defraud the system. But that is another story for another day...

Re: “Pension tensions

One must understand that there are many income levels and many different employee groups who work under the PERA plan. To imply that all public employees contributing to the PERA system now do "better than people in the private sector" is disingenuous at best and downright insulting at worst. As a public school teacher whose career is nearing the thirty-year mark, I barely make $50,000. I have not had a raise in over three years. My district health insurance plan is a joke. I have toiled and sacrificed for more than half of my life for the betterment of society and for the betterment of the next generation because I have more than dollar signs and more than personal gain in my eyes. Glen Gustafson can sigh all he wants (by the way, he earns three times over what I do); I am not going to feel guilty about the one decent thing that has been offered to me all these years. I have earned my pension, MANY times over. Thanks, Pam, for the kick in the teeth to teachers everywhere.
