Re: “West Point student quits, cites religious zealotry

I am a graduate of West Point from the class of 1974 and although I will say there is a strong overtone of religion there, I believe it comes from the values of the cadets themselves. It is a place of high ideals, honor, and integrity. All of these values dovetail with the ideals of leadership and duty, honor, and country that is sought to be instilled there. The only pressure I ever felt was from other cadets with more fundamentalist beliefs than me. But I never felt any official dogma or collusion from Army or Cadet officer staff about faith issues. If anything, there was always a conscious effort to not violate the beliefs of others. Respect was paramount. Perhaps things have changed, but I have not sensed or seen it on my visits. It does sound like this individual has had some very traumatic experiences while there, and perhaps continues to need healing. I can only wish him the best for his future.
