This tea shop stands in a corner of a busy shopping center, right next to a liquor store, and while it primarily relies on retail sales of loose-leaf tea, tea sets, French presses and other hot beverage accessories, the sales floor hosts a few iron tables that would not look out of place on the patio of a hip, breezy café. Customers can order cups of any tea available to drink on-site in ceramic or to-go in paper, as well as coffee brewed from locally roasted Pikes Perk beans. We opt for a cup of the house-blended Be Well wellness tea, an ostensibly curative blend of spearmint, lemongrass, cinnamon, cardamom and echinacea, with no black tea. On first steep, it’s delicate and mildly herbaceous, faintly minty, with cardamom standing out more on the complimentary second steep. We also take home a 1-ounce sachet of recommended lapsang souchong, a Chinese black tea traditionally dried over pine smoke. Brewed per instructions on the bag, it smells like a campfire, and the balanced smokiness overrides any tannins for a lovely cuppa.
