Bella’s Bakery & Café goes Cuban and Chilean

Bella’s Bakery & Café recently revamped its menu, adding sandwiches, breafast items and a big Latin twist. Two offerings we’re directed to are the Chilean El Churrasco ($9) and Cuban Media Noche ($9.75). The first seasons top round with ample salt and black pepper, plus what tastes like onion and/or garlic powder, placing the tender meat with avocado and tomato under a fried egg. The yolk oozes, soaking into generic sourdough slices — inauthentic to Chile, but it’s a pleasant bite overall. Bella’s does bake its own “traditional sweet media noche bread,” a soft egg dough confection, not challah and not very sweet when loaded with the Swiss, ham, roast pork, pickles and mustard that classically compose a Cuban sandwich. It crumbles, and the pork could use a brighter marinade; ham dominates. It’s functional but far from Lucy I’m Home’s food truck magic. A coconut pastelito ($2.25) tarnishes a tantalizing flavor. The puff pastry’s hard, the filling still frozen in spots.
