Re: “Breathing fire

I grew up on Dartmouth St. in Valley Stream, NY, about a block from Mel Bernstein's house. He was in the last house on the block, on the corner next to Barrett Park. My friends and I used to ride our bicycles down the alley on the way to the park, and stop to watch Mel building the 'Dragon Tail' choppers in his backyard. There was always a lot of activity at Mel's place- cool motorcycles, cool bikers, hot women. We didn't know he was famous at the time, or that his bikes were known world-wide. One day Mel came out in the alley and told us, "Don't look at the torch when I'm welding, it will damage your eyes." That's the kind of guy Mel was- caring, concerned, friendly, helpful, down-to-earth. Thanks for that bit of advice Mel, I never forgot it and I have never forgotten it was you who warned me. It's an honor to say I knew you and watched you build those great bikes.
