Ever since his formative years playing New York City’s Lower East Side with John Zorn’s experimental rock band Naked City, electric guitarist Bill Frisell has been known for his infallible technique and striking originality. He’s also proven himself to be remarkably prolific, appearing on an estimated 300 recordings by artists ranging from Lucinda Williams to Richard Hell & The Voidoids, while releasing more than four dozen albums of his own.

Frisell’s chameleonic nature is no less evident onstage; a 2016 national tour found him playing 20 dates with seven different backing bands. Currently, the musician is performing in an improvisational duo with the guitarist Julian Lage, who, although barely half Frisell’s age, has already released 10 albums of his own featuring guest appearances by the likes of jazz pianist Fred Hersch and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline.

You can currently go online to find a YouTube video of their full set at last year’ SHED Healdsburg Jazz Festival, complete with matching Fender Telecasters, elegant ambient soundscapes and single-note soloing that’s as exquisite as it is awe-inspiring.
