I was a member of the eleventh graduating class. I was there to learn to fly and fight and it was inspirational to me to have had as classroom instructors many captains, majors and a few colonels who had flown and fought. I was not aware that any of them held Ph.D.s though I am certain a couple held JDs. Maybe, that was a bygone era. There was something special that these instructors were talented enough to move seamlessly from an operational assignment to a classroom setting and that broad-based talent was something to be respected and emulated. Plus, the operatonal types shared good war stories. Maybe, I would have learned more chemistry from a civilian Ph.D., but to what end? I suppose USAFA needs to reconcile whether it wants to graduate technocrats or warriors.
