‘It’s not that I like music to sound shitty,” Black Lips co-founder Jared Swilley once told the Indy. “I just like it to sound human. And real. I hate robots with all my heart.” True to form, the Atlanta psych-rock band, whose music grew out of a shared fascination with Link Wray and The Stooges, continues to produce ragged and raucous recordings that make Guided by Voices’ lo-fi output sound like Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles. The band’s most recent album Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art? was produced by none other than Sean Lennon, whose approach to music can be nearly as offbeat as that of his mother Yoko Ono (who, by the way, can be heard ululating deep down in the mix on Black Lips’ “Occidental Front” single). Appropriately enough, the album also features a cover of The Beatles’ “It Won’t Be Long” that’s endearingly faithful to the original, albeit with vocal harmonies that intermittently suggest vinyl that’s been left out in the sun a little too long. Onstage, the band can, as always, be counted on to inject plenty of good old-fashioned chaos into the mix. Black Lips fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
