Join the Trails and Open Space (TOPS) working committee, which meets biweekly or monthly, to advise the Parks Advisory Board and City Council on the use of TOPS sales tax revenue for trails, open space, and parks in the city. Applications are being accepted for two new members at 1401 Recreation Way by July 12. Send an application including a one-page resume, a one-page essay explaining why you wish to serve on the committee, and the council district number where you live. Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado is looking for 75 people to participate in a trail-building project in the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area over the July Fourth weekend. The Spanish Peaks are located between Walsenberg and Trinidad near Cuchara. The trail construction is needed to preserve the area from private development. If you are still looking for outdoor fun, Aiken Audubon is organizing a trip to the Big Johnson Reservoir Open Space to inventory the native bird life on Saturday, July 6. Meet at the BJR Open Space near the Goldfield Road parking area at 6 a.m. RSVP is required, and a $2 donation for the adults is suggested. Call 719/683-7955 to sign up.
