Build your own mac and cheese at Purple Toad

It’s late when we pull into the Shops at Meridian Ranch parking lot, and we’ve just been skunked trying to visit another Peyton restaurant that’s closed early for the night due to low business volume. We’re not feeling the raucous Sunday night football crowd packing Purple Toad’s cavernous space, so we’re happy to indulge in the restaurant’s offer of delivery or pickup to customers at JAKs Brewing Company next door, free of charge.

We opt for a build-your-own mac and cheese, choosing to mix mushrooms and sausage crumbles in with the cheese sauce and cavatappi noodles. It doesn’t look like a huge amount of food when we open the box, but it proves filling. The sauce tastes appropriately cheesy and the mushrooms maintain a little tooth, though the sausage bites burst with salt before anything else.

We also order fish and chips, getting three pieces of tilapia atop a mound of fast food-cut fries cooked to a beautiful tender-crispy balance, though, oddly, bearing minimal salt. The fish itself has a light, super crispy breading — nice. But lacking noticeable seasoning beyond salt, the fish rates unmemorable.
