Re: “Cliff hanger

Indy needs to get their facts straight instead of parroting the Gazette's old story about Grand Ave neighbors upset over obstructed views. The only "crazy" demands are coming from the Texas developer, which didn't seem to have consulted Manitou's zoning and Historic Preservation ordinances before they started the process. (Nor did the Manitou Springs Historic Preservation Commission, for that matter as will be amply demonstrated.) Galtex demands that Manitou Springs set aside its entire Historic Preservation ordinance and give variances for height and setbacks without meeting (or even claiming to meet) any of the criteria in the law. In "exchange" the town gets a monstrous fake castle three and a half times the size of the Spa building, standstill traffic, pollution, exhaustion of our scarce water resources, and a couple years worth of construction, including blasting of a two and a half story hole into the ground and hauling the rock through town over our failing historic bridges. The developer and the City itself shouldn't pretend to be shocked and aggrieved when we ask them to obey common sense laws that other developers have been made to observe for decades in this town. Over the years the residents of Manitou Springs have had to teach the City time and again that slaughtering the golden goose (with mining, gambling, and now a giant convention hotel) is not a winning strategy for economic development. We're still here, and I don't think anyone that comes to the appeal hearing will think we're being unreasonable.
