Colorado Springs' most eclectic electric bassist, Charlie Milo has continued to be a constant presence on the local music scene, whether playing and singing with the current version of his trio — with guitarist Jessy Lee and drummer Jason Davis — or pursuing collaborative groups like the avant hip-hop Flodignatic.

In addition to gigging live, he's producing tracks for local hip-hop musicians and has begun writing classical pieces for a string quartet he's hoping to pull together.

Not enough, right? "I've also started a series of beat tapes called 'The Jelly,'" he says, "which focus on hip-hop tracks made from sampling hippie jam bands."

Also floating around the Charlie Milo universe is a concept album, which began life earlier this year as Spaceship Rock Video: Flying Guitar (2000). Not necessarily the most intuitive title for an album that was slated for 2013 release, especially since the concept didn't revolve around spaceships or flying guitars.

"We were writing the album alongside a novella that I'm currently working on," says Milo, "which tells the story of my dog Manolo Bernarducci leaving the house, getting into a rotten taco, befriending an anthropomorphic cockroach, and going on strange journey to get back to the house."

In the wake of his trio's lineup changes, the musician says that "first act" has been shelved in favor of a new one he and Lee are writing called "Panda Bear Beach." We'll tell you what it's about some other time.

2nd place: Arch Hooks
