Chef Sugar’s Cakes and Confections sells bright macarons by the dozen

Chef Sugar’s Cakes and Confections' owner Heidi Trelstad’s been in this N. Academy location for eight years now, racking up customer loyalty and notability. She’s even appeared on Food Network’s Halloween Wars. But when we drop by, it’s not for a custom 4-foot-tall cake in one of a staggering number of flavor combinations, many of which are available gluten-free, but for a dozen sizable macarons ($37.80). They’re all colored bright as Muppets and packed with a thick slab of buttercream — too thick, for my money, and decidedly indelicate, but rich and a delight in its own way. We most favor the tangy Key lime, the floral and sweet lemon, and the strong but not perfumy lavender. For the blueberry and orange macarons, we wish for a little more fruity punch, especially for the over-sweet orange. Cream cheese tang overwhelms the red velvet flavor, and the cookies and cream macaron tastes like the offspring of an Oreo and a fistful of powdered sugar. Still, the shells are on point.
