Chef Yanira leaves Quinn’s for her own Latin food truck

After more than 15 years at Jack Quinn’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, most recently as its head chef, Yanira Almendares left in November to launch a food truck, Yanira Cuisine Latin Food, with help from her husband/sous chef Felipe Padilla. They hail from Honduras, so the limited menu here shows a few Honduran-specific touches, but gringo palates will be satisfied by common Mexican items like tacos al pastor, and even chicken wings and a burger. Outside a Valero gas station near Academy Boulevard and Constitution Avenue (they also park at Latin Quarters nearby on Saturday nights), we catch them for a plate of Salvadoran pupusas whose listed chicharron co-filling tastes more like just bacon (I’m not complaining), with side pickled onions and cabbage lightening bites. Ground beef empanadas sport a little crisp crunch and some mushy spots, but we forget textures once we pour the awesome, spicy chile verde (jalapeño) and rojo (ancho-chipotle-chile de árbol) atop.
