In what may well become a Halloween season tradition, goth-rock chanteuse Chelsea Wolfe will pay her respects to Jack Nicholson, writer’s block and identical twins with this pre-Halloween performance at the hotel that inspired Stephen King’s The Shining.

The Sacramento native began her career more than a decade ago as a solo act in local coffee shops, strumming her guitar along to indie-folk originals that made Lana Del Rey sound like a fountain of joy. As her profile rose, Wolfe took on a considerably more theatrical persona, as well as a musical approach sufficiently high-decibel and doom-laden to survive a 2018 tour with Ministry.

Last month, she released her sixth album, Birth of Violence, which incorporates elements of her more singer-songwriterly roots, and was likened by one critic to “standing outside watching the stars in winter: stark, beautiful, and a little numbing.”

Two more fun facts: Wolfe has a line of Sylvia Plath poetry (“Death is the dress she wears”) tattooed to her ribcage, and her middle name is Joy. — Bill Forman
