Caryl Churchill's 1979 play Cloud Nine follows a British family in colonial Africa in the first act, and in Victorian London in the second. Before the end, the father goes down on the governess; a male visitor reveals he's slept with the wife, the son and the servant; an orgiastic ceremony kicks off in the park; and someone remembers how awesome masturbation is. The actors also switch characters and sexes between the two acts, leading to commentaries on gender, race and sexuality, not to mention the overarching theme of colonial power. "The forge of war shall weld the chains of brotherhood secure," goes an opening song. "And to all time, in every clime, our empire shall endure." See it performed by the UCCS Student Theatre Program at Osborne Studio Theater (3955 Regent Circle, tiny.cc/3njcmx) at 8 tonight. Tickets are $5, free for UCCS students. Bryce Crawford
