Re: “Appraisal process accelerated for city's Strawberry Fields 'Disposal Project'

A note to the good people of Colorado Springs – I don't mean to be cynical, defeatist, or condescending, but I can tell you that this land swap and the politics surrounding it is typical of politics in Colorado Springs. I've been observing local politics for 40 years now, and our local government officials have rarely conducted themselves with transparency or openness. This city is not ruled by people who value open space, building public trust, or social cohesion. This city is ruled by people sympathetic to corporate interests and they don't value your input or mine. Writing letters to the mayor and city Council will do no good – this is a done deal and has been from the beginning. This is a street fight, and as we are lacing up our boxing gloves and reading up on the marquis of Queensberry rules, the other side has just cracked our skulls open with a set of brass knuckles. It's time to get loud and noisy in our protests and to get into the politicians' faces to let them know that they have a real fight on their hands. Remember also that Phillip Anschutz controls not only the Denver Post but Also the Gazette telegraph, and the news of the swap is not reaching most people. How about contacting local television news stations? It's worth a try. It's also worth gearing up for and contributing to an eventual legal fight. I have done so already and I hope you will too. Thanks!

Re: “UPDATE: Parks Board approves land swap

Colorado Springs politics at their finest. As I predicted, this deal was approved long ago and no one involved gives a rat's ass about what the opponents have to say. Democracy? Not in CS. The only question now is how large the margin for approval will be when the City Council votes in favor of the swap, which of course they will.

Underhanded, secretive, and opaque, and the most enraging aspect of it all is the brazen nature of how the TOSC, Parks Board, and our city dictators, I mean elected officials, are shoving this through. Not even the appearance of being even handed or open minded. It was all wrapped in a bow and delivered to Phillip Anschutz long ago. This is why our city is a statewide and national laughingstock.

I will contribute to any legal challenge to halt this deal, because that will be the only way to stop it. I urge everyone to consider making a donation should a Go Fund Me campaign be started. Mr. Skorman and Mr. Obee, we are behind you 100% on this!

Re: “UPDATE: Skorman ejected from TOSC advisory board

To the good people of Colorado Springs -this is yet another incendiary example of the arrogant, imperious, opaque, secretive, and corrupt practices of our local government and it should come as NO surprise -it was ever thus, certainly for the 40+ years I have been observing the politics here in CS.

I grew up in this city and have watched it decline for decades now. The BEST things we have in Colorado Springs are our open spaces. I maintain that no community in the U.S. has a more beautiful natural setting than that of Colorado Springs. Ours should be a world-class city, deserving of the incredible beauty of our surroundings. Instead, we are all too often a laughingstock of the state and the country. Why? I think one huge reason is the appalling behavior of our local representatives, both elected and appointed, and the consequences of that behavior. The debate surrounding the land swap, with the city's refusal to release the details of appraisals of PUBLIC LAND, and the refusal of the Broadmoor to release a detailed site plan for its proposed use of Strawberry Fields, is yet another sad example. All we ask for is information, the chance to openly and honestly weigh in on decisions concerning OUR park land, and to hope that our voices will be heard and heeded. Uh huh.

To those of us who want to preserve the Strawberry Fields open space: make no mistake, this land swap is going to be approved. It is a foregone conclusion, and it matters not one bit what thousands of us think. Only one person's opinion in this debate matters -that of Mr. Anschutz. Why? I could give you a billion reasons.

It's time to mobilize for a legal fight, because that is the last, best chance we will have to stop this process. I will gladly contribute to such an effort, and I encourage others to do the same.

RMS was spot on in his comments!

Instead, we are all too often a laughingstock of the state and the country. Why? Close-minded conservatism is one big reason. Another is the secrecy, opacity, and corruption endemic in our local politics. Re: “City refuses to release appraisals in Broadmoor land exchange; opponents start to mobilize

A note to Rocket625 -Complain all you want to about us "leftists", but let me tell you something. In contrast to those whose mantra is "It's MY money, I earned every penny, and the government is not entitled to ANY of it", we proud leftists, progressives, and liberals are willing to support, with our money and our voices, those amenities that benefit us all. Do you like nice parks, open space, and those facilities that make our lives in Colorado Springs more enjoyable? Well guess what -you have to PAY for them. Sometimes you have to FIGHT for them.
