Re: “Letters

If Bill Durland is a professor emeritus of our community college system let's be thankful that likely means he's retired and no longer filling young heads with such mush. He is either incredibly ignorant, or like most from his apparent political standpoint, purposefully misleading.

What evidence is there that taking money from working individuals and distributing it to those who don't work actually produces more jobs? (not that I'm opposed to unemployment benefits, but Bill seems to make the case that these benefits actually create more jobs)

War funding? Check congressional voting over the last decade Bill and you will find that the majority Democratic party has been largely responsible for funding the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

And, Bill seems to make the case that the unwashed masses are opposed to sensible social spending (like jobs!) as he puts it. Huh? Again please tell me how taking tax dollars from working people and distributing it through government programs creates real long term high paying jobs? The stimulus spending over the last year proves that it only creates short term jobs that cost the tax payers dearly both now and with backbreaking deficits into the future.

The great debate is on in this country, as to rely largely on government or largely on the private sector to drive this economy into the future. Each has its set of pros and cons, but even with "the ones we've been waiting for" in power now, history teaches us that going too far down either road is a bad idea. A mostly free market with sensible restraints built this great country. Mostly government run economies have failed everywhere they've been tried.

Yup, I'd love to see a more well educated public in terms of political science, but Bill please leave that to someone with some intellectual honesty.
