Colorado Classic won't return to the Springs in 2018

  • Bethany Alvarez

Colorado Springs hosted the first stage of the inaugural Colorado Classic road bicycle race on Aug. 10. Though the race led to traffic nightmares, especially downtown and on the Westside, and some businesses complained of lost customers, the city focused on the positives. The race, they noted in a press release, was expected by RPM Events Group to bring about 500,000 spectators to Colorado over its three-day run, be watched by 41 million to 50 million people on TV in over 140 countries, and another 500,000 were expected to watch online.

Nevertheless, Tom Osborne, CEO of The Sports Corp., has told multiple media outlets that the race will not return to the Springs in 2018, a decision made some six months ago because The Sports Corp. instead plans to support the U.S. Senior Open golf tournament at The Broadmoor next July. Osborne has said that the organization will attempt to bring the Classic back to the Springs in 2019. The city is seeking feedback on the race at coloradosprings.gov/coloradoclassic.
