The upstart online newspaper, the Colorado Sun, largely composed of veterans of The Denver Post, debuted on Sept. 10 with features on the drought's impact on farmers, homelessness in Durango, campaign ads and many other stories.

Many Post staff jumped ship due to repeated layoffs by owner Alden Global Capital, which has squeezed the Post to the max.

Westword's Michael Roberts had this to say about the Sun's launch: "This material would seem to appeal mainly to a high-minded audience that loved the Post's most ambitious undertakings and is upset that so few of them show up in print these days. Still, it's unclear whether there are enough of these folks to keep the Sun shining over the long term."

The new journalistic endeavor is being funded by reader subscriptions and Civil, a company investing heavily in sustainable journalism across the country.
