It's Creek Week — an event running from Sept. 30 to Oct. 8 designed to raise awareness about just how important the Fountain Creek watershed is to the region. On Sept. 28, the El Paso County Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing the event, as they've done in years past.

"It's the largest creek cleanup event in the state," Larry Small, executive director of the Fountain Creek Watershed Flood Control and Greenway District, stated in a release, adding, "It's common for trash and debris to end up in waterways — clogging drainage systems, impacting wildlife, affecting water quality and ruining the view of our natural landscapes."

Last year during Creek Week, 30 tons of litter was removed from the creek and streams. This year, cleanup efforts have expanded to include parks and parking lots. Visit fountaincreekweek.com to join a cleanup event or register your own.
