Even with lack of adequate and timely leadership from city administration, these firefighters did a better job than anyone could have ever asked, and with less time to make critical decisions than they should have been given by the leadership to accomplish their job.

In this article some of the firefighters re-lived what they saw and did and no doubt are feeling the mental stress of what happened all over again. There are very few jobs where people volunteer to risk their lives for others, and these people deserve better.

So whether city officials choose to release damaging information about the leadership's decisions or not, I hope they (at least internally) learn some valuable lessons that will save lives next time and prevent firefighters and citizens from having to ever go through this again here.

Someone should be writing a book about the heroism that took place on the ground in Mountain Shadows and elsewhere. Now, that would be a worthwhile cause for the firefighters to re-live what happened.
