Re: “Are you a friend of the NRA? (Peggy Littleton's asking.)

Let's supplement this conveniently out-of-context article with some quotes from Commissioner Littleton by a reporter who actually interviewed her:

β€œThe board sponsors many resolutions for community members, some of those being for parks, the Humane Society, Earth Day, Single Parents day.”

"It has been presented eight of the past 10 years."

"We would welcome a group that teaches responsible firearms practices to make us a safer community.”

Better to celebrate responsible gun use than to ignore it altogether...

Re: “Duel: El Paso County vs. Obama

It's interesting how you make such a big deal about a county who refuses to abide by federal laws that infringe on 2nd Amendment rights (which ARE in the Constitution, and plus, were regulated by executive order, NOT Congress), but you seem to be fine with a state that votes to legalize marijuana (which is NOT in the Constitution). I'm pro-Amendment 64, but I'm just pointing out some inconsistencies...

Keeping and bearing arms was put in the Bill of Rights specifically to keep this issue out of public debate (along with the freedom of speech, freedom of the press, due process, trial by jury, protection against cruel and unusual punishment, etc.) All I'm saying is that issue is so weighty that it cannot simply be infringed upon by an executive order... It wasn't even meant to be an issue that was voted on, because it's a RIGHT.

Of course Harvard Law is the preeminent law school in the country, but you can't just say "He went to Harvard Law, so he's right." Harvard Law interprets the Constitution differently from Columbia Law, which interprets differently from Chicago, and so on. Simply invoking "Harvard Law says so" does not automatically make whatever you say right. Come on.

The simplistic arguments and personal attacks are unprofessional and anti-intellectual. I expect a higher standard from liberal media.

Re: “Golf for the rich and not-famous

Are you kidding me? The least you could do is appreciate that these "elites" are voluntarily redistributing their wealth for public services. If this fundraiser alone raises $50,000 (golfers + corporate sponsorship), then that's great news for the city.

If the city government was pushing for limited government and doing nothing about it, I'd welcome your harsh criticism. But come on, this is redistribution. Isn't that what you people want? Maybe you're just angry that the private market is actually doing something good for society.

Criticism aside, excellent article. You can't get much wittier than that. Well done.
