Re: “An educator's letter to Obama

If all teachers had, your level of commitment, passion and dedication the system would be humming along and no one would be thinking about how to reform it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. As a father of five, married to a speech language pathologist (masters degree) who worked in special education I have seen the best and worst of our current system. My children ranged in ability from very bright and capable of all advanced placement to cognitively impaired with severe physical disabilities. In my opinion, most schools and educators spend their time and effort where it returns the biggest reward. This is only human but it leaves the only average and below struggling for the time and attention, they need. Discouraged educators and uninterested parents who just want to get them through it push too many children through the system. They graduate as functional illiterates who cannot read or write at an acceptable level. Some lack basic math skills, which preclude them from even running a cash register or accurately making change. If even fifty percent of our teachers were truly dedicated to giving the best education possible to each child, we would still need to replace the other fifty percent. I do not believe that anywhere near fifty percent of our educators have that passion or dedication. I do believe that testing and merit pay will help us find and keep the good ones, and replace the rest.

Re: “City budget: time to cry uncle

What is government supposed to do? Back in the day, the old, sick, infirm and unwanted were left by the side of the trail. Is that the kind of society you want? Seems to me that government has five primary jobs; infrastructure, caring for those who cannot care for themselves, peacekeeping, international relations and national defense. All of these require the collection of taxes and some level of administration. Hopefully life will never throw you a curve ball that leaves you sitting beside the trail wondering where everybody went. Happy Trails
