Most artists are coy about the origins of their songs, particularly the ones with lyrics that sound messed up and personal. So it’s refreshing, in a way, that Deer Tick frontman John McCauley will do the exact opposite, candidly admitting that a number of the tracks on the noisy Americana band’s recent releases are largely autobiographical. Despite a rowdy reputation for volatile stage shows littered with broken bottles and smashed guitars (Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard is far better at holding his alcohol), McCauley is just as capable of loping and moping around like a Rhode Island version of Jerry Jeff Walker, albeit with harder drugs and way more first-person pronouns. Last month, Deer Tick released two simultaneous and somewhat schizophrenic albums, the folk-inclined Deer Tick Vol. 1 and the more high-decibel garage-punk Deer Tick Vol. 2, so their live shows will most likely split the difference.
