DeJohnette and Co., and Speedy Ortiz with the new and noteworthy

DeJohnette/Grenadier/Medeski/Scofield, Hudson

DeJohnette/Grenadier/Medeski/Scofield, Hudson (Motema) – When it comes to releasing new albums with a wide range of collaborators along for the ride, Jack DeJohnette has kept a faster pace than most of his jazz compatriots. His newest combo, Hudson, is a quartet with Larry Grenadier, John Medeski and John Scofield, who are all acclaimed artists in their own right. Hudson specializes in original compositions and reinterpretations of rock classics like “Lay Lady Lay” and “Up on Cripple Creek.” Some naysayers might critique this as a bid for the mainstream, but Hendrix’s ghost is bound to approve.
Speedy Ortiz, Twerp Verse

Speedy Ortiz, Twerp Verse (Carpark Records) – Before Sadie Dupuis became a rock goddess, she earned an MFA and taught poetry at Amherst. Yet her band, Speedy Ortiz, has always prioritized musical ambience (a la Pavement and early Liz Phair) over lyrical cleverness. This fourth album plays word games, but polishes a fragmentary style that is defined as much by pauses as riffs.
