Re: “Maketa campaign reveals investigation involving opponent

You made a statement saying in your blog on this thread stating:

" I have now deleted from our site several comments related to this story that have gone far out of bounds in violating our rules that clearly prohibit personal attacks. We also are aware that some commenters regarding the sheriff campaign are signing up under multiple aliases and making it look as though they are more than one person. Whenever we see this, we are suspending all of those accounts from being able to post online at, and we will continue to do so. As long as comments are civil, no matter which side they take, we will not remove them. But we will not allow our site to be manipulated by people who indulge in personal attacks and also try to deceive us and readers by portraying themselves as someone else."

I have read and followed your newspapers weekly reports on this race, and have seen some very personal attacks from many bloggers towards numerous individuals, including the Sheriff. I saw one last night that I am assuming sparked this intervention and agree it is time the indy takes control of what it is 'publishing'; however, I am a bit confused as to many, many blogs remain that appear to mean as being mean, vicious attacks on inviduals. Those making those attacks are continuously doing so each week.

When sigining onto your site as a blogger it states:

"The Colorado Springs Independent requires that users register for access to add comments or post forum entries on the site. This is done to avoid anonymous posts and cut down on unproductive comments. Please ensure responses to required registration entries are factual, or you will be removed from the system. Other entries are optional, but you are responsible for their content. The content of comments and user posts are the responsibility of the poster. We expect posters to refrain from inflammatory and/or hate language, which will be grounds for deletion. Please be considerate and stay on-topic, particularly in comments. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. "

I have seen some commenters, some who are not still commenting, and others still are on each weeks articles (to name a few: 1520Oneida, Parkview1649, Oneida1520, juno, NoMoreTaxes, rooster... ) These bloggers I have seen continuously attack others on this site with information that is NOT backed by facts, and are considered to be personal attacks. If some comments are erased for the reasons you stated, why aren't all comments of this nature being blocked and erased to keep the playing ground fair? It seems from a readers standpoint that the Indy is using personal preference in what personal attacks and derogatory comments they feel can remain on this site for all to see and what ones can't.

I look forward to hearing your explination of why this is, Ralph.
