The Dex’s Dogs hot dog cart has expanded into a full-service diner, Dex's Diner, offering breakfast and Southern-style lunch options, plus signature hot dogs. Co-owner Greg Duncan, a Tennessee transplant, started the diner in February. We take his advice and dine on jambalaya ($13) with a side of cole slaw. The rice has been cooked into a porridge, and the trinity veg flavor’s strong, though sliced andouille from Palmer Lake’s Sara’s Sausage plays a bit role at best, and the shrimp’s vanished entirely. Coarse-cut slaw’s a delight, though. For dessert, we add a slice of chess pie ($2.99), a Southern dessert traditionally made from eggs, butter, sugar, vanilla and cornmeal. The predominant flavors on Duncan’s are sugar, salt, butter and nutmeg; it’s gooey, tender and very rich, salt balancing the massive amount of sugar. We intend to return for a hot dog, but the day we do, the diner’s shut down so Duncan and crew can assist in the search for a missing hiker. That speaks volumes about their community dedication.
