Re: “The case for a higher minimum wage

Actually Jenna, if you think the people who voted for the minimum wage increase aren't affected by the cost of living I would say it's you who have no idea what that has already done to the local economy. It's always a balancing act for employers and sometimes it needs a kick in the pants to keep pace with the needs of the employees. Small business owners will adapt & survive or they won't. I think the majority will survive. I think the majority of employees will also survive. That neither will is always the argument and it usually doesn't pan out that way.

Re: “The case for a higher minimum wage

To people who make a living wage, or more, this seems like so much whining, but to those working full-time, and more, who can't afford a place to live, this is about survival. The biggest thing Colorado can do to fix that is figure out how to slow down the rise in housing costs. People only want to be able to live not get rich.

To Mikeb45 - The federal minimum wage of $7.25 hasn't risen since 2009, so any increase by the states during this time is the result of what the labor market needs. Inflation in Colorado is much higher than the national average, I'll give you that, but while they figure out how to lower it people have to be able to have a roof and eat. You either pay that in wages or in public assistance. I'd argue that paying a higher wage is a much better use of my dollars. Sure some businesses will not be able to adjust because they operate on a very small margin, and some people will lose their jobs, but the numbers will be small compared to the number of people this increase will help.

Re: “Hope swings eternal

@Melchett - I support Hope Solo and I agree with her view that as an athlete when a team doesn't come at you, when they clearly could have, it can feel like they are cowardly in not doing so. It is a feeling she expressed and I have no problem with her expressing her true feelings. I understand that not everyone agrees that she should express her feelings in a truthful manner and should make nice because that's what female athletes are supposed to do. I would much rather be represented by someone who isn't afraid to say it like she feels than someone who makes up lies to cover up their juvenile stupidity. I will agree to disagree on this with you. Have a day.

Re: “Hope swings eternal

@melchett - I didn't say she should get a pass, but I'm not disappointed in her passion or her way of expressing herself. She said US was courageous and the antonym is cowardly, so I think in her analogy it works. Coward is one of those words that triggers strong emotions, so I'm not surprised people have a problem with it. What I did say is that I strongly don't agree with your characterization that she's an "infant" or "toddler-esque". She's a grown woman who speaks her mind and if that offends some people's sensibilities, then it just does. I'm answering this after her announced suspension and termination of her US Soccer contract, so I guess you win. Male athletes are not expected to "play nice" the same way female athletes are and this is just a reaffirmation of that. Finally, I have no problem being represented by an athlete that puts it all out there, truthfully and unapologetically. Life is often not pretty, but I always appreciate when it's real.

Re: “Hope swings eternal

@Melchett - I said Ronaldo got much less flak, no one seriously called for him to quit the game..or worse. I also didn't argue tactics. Bunkering is an accepted tactic but it doesn't stop a player from feeling they didn't have a chance to actually play the game, much like a home run hitter would feel disappointed when they are intentionally walked, without a chance to actually play the game. Athletes of all kinds have made comments immediately after a game that aren't pretty, and the media seeks them out hoping they'll catch them in one. Solo says it like she feels and I won't fault her for that. Like I said she walked back her choice of words later, but you refuse to acknowledge that apparently.

@happyfew - you already didn't like Solo, so I'm not surprised you agree. To say she's a horrible person, who I assume you only know through media, is quite the judgement. I only know you through your comment, so I'll reserve judgement.

Re: “Hope swings eternal

Solo said what she felt and if most people who have played a sport are honest with themselves they've felt the same way. If your opponent refuses to play in a way that you know they are capable of and refuses to give you a chance to play the game as intended, then you feel hard done by..and in the aftermath of losing to that opponent, in the immediate aftermath - on a global stage, you might just say how you feel. She did walk it back in a later statement, but no one seems to want to acknowledge that. Of course parking the bus is a tactic, but one that almost every opponent hates, so seeing Solo say what many of us have felt was refreshing and vindicating for many of us less accomplished sportswomen. Ronaldo said the same thing using different verbiage and got much less flak because you know, men are supposed to be competitive..women, not so much.
